Maluma Talks Investments in Streaming App ‘Trebel,’ First Cristalino Mezcal and More

It is well known that Maluma has built a successful career since his debut in 2012 when he was 16 years old. The Colombian artist since then has released multiple albums and countless hit singles that have skyrocketed his career to a global scale.

Juan Luis Londoño Arias, known professionally as Maluma, is a Colombian singer, songwriter, and now actor. The Medellin-born singer has sold over 18 million records, placing him as one of the best-selling Latin Music artists of the moment.

He is known as a reggaeton/urban-pop artist that does not fail to top global charts. His most well-known collaborations feature artists like J Balvin, Shakira, The Weeknd, Madonna, and Ricky Martin.

I’ve personally interviewed some of the biggest stars in the Latin space over the last few years. I’ve come to learn much about the industry but also a lot about what it takes to become successful, whether you want to be a music artist, manager, or producer. The people who surround you will influence your actions and your thoughts. Keep good, hard-working people around. Good physical health and mental health are key components to success. Being a global superstar like Maluma comes with many challenges.

It’s not just money and fame. This job dictates a level of discipline that not many are willing to stick to. Since 2012 Maluma has stuck to it, and as a result, his music sticks.

Maluma has also had success on streaming and in theaters, having taken part in La Voz Kids and La Voz México, Disney’s Encanto, and most recently in the film Marry Me ft Jennifer Lopez. It’s becoming increasingly popular to see Latin artists making their acting debut in Hollywood and on major streaming platforms.

It is no secret that Maluma has a world-class marketing team. They have been able to break boundaries and have helped him dominate the global Latin music scene. They are now venturing into fragrance, fashion, and spirits. I’m sure his recent investments in Mezcal and music streaming are only the tip of the iceberg. One of his more recent investments is
Contraluz, Mexico’s first Cristalino Mezcal.

It is cultivated from Espadín agave and is matured for approximately six months in charred American oak barrels. Upon tasting it, he fell in love. This business opportunity was presented to him by his father. Maluma recently also invested in Trebel, a music streaming app. And has also Launched a clothing line and gender-neutral fragrances under the brand “Loyalty by Maluma,” in partnership with Macy’s.

Maluma’s music, creativity, and business development skills have positioned him as an industry leader. The support of his family and management team have helped him evolve and sell out arenas and product shelves worldwide. He is truly a strikingly different artist.

Our team recently had the honor of interviewing Maluma days after his performance at Baja Beach Fest. We talked about his recent album, staying grounded, and sneak peeks about his upcoming projects.

Here’s what he had to say:

Your latest album, “The Love & Sex Tape,” just dropped in June! What was your favorite song to record? For me, all of the songs were amazing to record because I went back to my Reggaeton essence from when I started my career.

You’ve always been a very positive and driven person. How do you stay so grounded and focused? Do you have any practices that keep you on the right path? I focus on always being the better version of myself by surrounding myself with love from my family and friends. Discipline is a big component for me, and I try to focus on working out daily, eating well and meditating.

Can we expect to see you act more in the near future? Yes! I really loved it and this is just the beginning.

Do you have any passion projects you’re working on outside of music and acting? I just became an investor for the first Cristalino Mezcal called Contraluz and Trebel, which is a music streaming platform offering upcoming artists in Latin America new ways to upload their music. I have also launched a clothing line with Macy’s and my own fragrance company, and both are called “Royalty by Maluma.” My team and I are always looking for ways to innovate in different markets.

You’ve worked with female power players like Shakira, JLo, Anitta and more. Who would you love to collaborate with but haven’t had a chance yet? I would love to collaborate with Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars. I admire their music, style and history within this industry.

What’s the biggest song you’ve never released? What are we missing out on? Haha! Oh, there is so much I haven’t released that I am getting ready to do soon. It will be very different and it is music that I have worked on for years.

What’s next for you, Maluma? Well, in September, we are working on releasing the Fall collection with Macy’s for my clothing line, “Royalty by Maluma.” Also, we are getting ready to release next year a new set for my fragrance brand. And, focusing on new music for my fans.

The definition of Contrast is ‘to be strikingly different.’ What makes you strikingly different? Being different is just being yourself and not being anyone else.
